Writing To Expalin.

Kia ora, this is a Piece of writing I have done recently about why a Marae is special to maori. Below my writing I have self assessed my writing and why I scored myself those numbers. What I found difficult was finding different ideas that all link to the same topic. I need work on a lot in my writing. I have learnt a lot in writing in this past year.

The Marae: A special place in the community.

A marae is a special place to all maori for particular reasons, special occasions and celebrations are one of the main things a marae is used for, what everyone should know inside and around on the grounds of a marae is the tikanga and kawa that will keep our ancestors history alive. Art is all around a marae, telling different stories and how they all connect back to the marae.

A marae is a special place to maori because of the celebrations they have, special occasions including birthdays, family reunions, weddings and even heavy hearted occasions like tangi. It’s always good to have a family get together every once in awhile so nobody loses contact with any family around New Zealand or even around the world, making new connections with family members that you have not ever met in your life.

A marae is significant to maori because of the tikanga used at all marae. Everyone gets taught at a young age not to jump around on the mattresses and pillows, no eating in the wharenui, no walking over people, no shoes allowed to be worn in this marae and heaps of other things we can and can’t do. Walking into a marae while the kaumatua or kuia are speaking or singing waiata is also really disrespectful. Knowing all the tikanga will help us and keep us all safe in our cultural heritage because this is how our tupuna were once raised.

From the first view of the marae to the little steps you take to get inside the whare, art will be surrounding you all over. The carvings on the walls and all over the room all tell their own stories about the marae they are sitting at today. All the different carvings that hold the walls together in and around the marae will keep us safe while being under that roof.

A special place to all maori is the marae, from celebrations to making connections to learning and knowing the tikanga around the grounds of a marae and even all the precious carvings all over a marae. A marae is a place to cheerios memories with family from near and far, a place for almost any homeless to stay, it is a place anyone can call home.

Inquiry - Robotics

For inquiry today we tested our robot to see if all the cords and all the pieces were in the right place. My group and I all took turns driving the robot on the table. It was alright for some time we just had to somehow fix the wheels on the left side of it because they didn't roll normally like the others, so we tried, and tried but couldn't figure it out so we put it back on the table and kept driving it, it was slowly getting better, at one point of the one of the kids in our group lost control of it and it reversed backwards off the table, so we had to re-build it again, luckily not all the pieces came apart. It took some time to fix again but we managed to complete it, it was a bit better then how it was before it died, so in a way, when it reversed off the table it sort of helped. This is a photo of our end result.

Be Funky

Today we used a new online site called 'be funky' which is just a collage maker and all you do is choose your photo's and add your background, word art and extra details if needed. We will be using this site more often till we get the hang of it.
This is our haka powhiri/Manu korero. I really enjoyed these 3 speakers and they all really inspired me in their own way.

Maths.

Cybersmart

WALT: Create a positive digital footprint.
Today we Had Whaea Deborah was in our class and we learnt about positive and negative things online. we also learnt what to post privately and what can be posted publicly. We also learnt to make sure if you sent something funny or anything at all to people that you can trust because if you send it to just someone randomness random you. could wake up the next day and millions of people could have it.

For this activity we had to read what each person had to say and red means that this information is not positive to share and green means that ithe is something that can be posted without any hassle of anything bad coming your way.

Holiday school

Who goes to school on the holidays?? Well long story short I do…. It was a really long week but it was pretty good I must say. Day 1! So, I got woken up at 6:30, on a Saturday morning, when I normally sleep in till at least lunch time but, because I forgot all about what we were doing. Anyways I got ready to go while everyone else was all waiting for me because I didn’t get a reminder or anything about this so I took my time while my family looked really annoyed by how slow I was going, I got ready as slow as I wanted. I finally finished so we all jumped in the car and off we went for a really long drive…. I made that sound really long but we really only went to the Ngawha school which is only 15 minutes away. We got there in a blink of an eye, not exactly realizing that we were way too early so we sat at the school for 20 minutes and the key finally turned up I felt like we played for ages but we didn’t really. When the nans opened the doors it looked really old and ugly but that’s where we had to sleep. After everybody finally came which took forever we did a meet and greet type of thing well all we had to do was say our names and our parents names which was easy. Then at about 9:30pm all the adults stayed inside for a meeting and all the kids went outside and played games like tiggy, spotlight, go home stay home and more half of them we played I didn’t even know what they were but I got used to them really quick. Most of us kids didn’t go to bed until 4 on sunday morning and we didn’t know we had to wake up at 8:00 in the morning so alot of us were really tired. Day 2! So I went with a few of my cousins went to go ask my mum and dad what we were doing today, they told us it was a surprise, we went around asking all the adults but nobody wanted to tell us…. So I went for a quick shower and then waited…. And waited…. And waited, then we thought they were finally thought they were going to tell us but all they said was “all the kids get in the car, we’re going for a ride.” turns out we were sitting in the car for a long time so long I went to sleep. We were going for a easter hunt in the bush, literally in the middle of nowhere, it was so much fun the adults told us “we have hidden 120 chocolate eggs somewhere around this area, you all get 15 eggs each” so off we all went to find our eggs. It took us at least 1 hour to find all the eggs. After we got back to the school we got ready again and jumped straight back into the car and went for another ride, all of us were so excited until we got to the amazing Ngawha Spring. We all knew if we stayed in Ngawha it would be really stink, I walked through the gates and walked straight back out because it was so stink. So through the whole time we were there which was 4 hours long, I sat in the car. When we got back to the school, we had dinner then all the kids went back outside till we got tired. Day 3! We pretty much just had fun and games and big hangi and boil ups at Ngawha school not that much to say here I guess it was kinda boring I was too tired to play so I sat inside playing on my phone. Day 4! This is the day when all the real fun came through. So, after breakfast and showers and everything else, we jumped back into the car again and off we went. Turns out we only went to Waitangi for 2 enjoyable rides on the waka. There was only 2 adults on board on both rides, I guess this doesn’t sound that interesting but it was only fun because at one point when we were on the water, my older brother wasn’t in Waitangi because he was getting lunch and on the first ride so my dad had to tell little stories and my other brother had to steer which was really difficult so as we were going around in the water he turned too hard and when my dad was telling his stories all the kids were laughing and yelled LOOK !! we were going straight for the other boats that were parked up so he pulled the paddle as hard as he could to steer away from the boats then my dad ran as fast as he could to the back of the waka, he also pulled the steerer as hard as he could, he pulled so hard the steerer snapped in half, it fell into the water and my dad went straight down with it. All the kids laughed so hard it was so funny. So in the end we did crash, not into anyone elses boats but we did hit a pole, thankfully there was no dents in the pole or the waka which is a success, on the other hand we went back without a steerer so we went back really slow. It was a really different experience for us as kids. After that adventure we went back for dinner, every night at dinner most of us kids had a missive habit of talking about bread on bread (stuffing on bread) I guess it was pretty funny but then it got really annoying. After dinner and dishers and everything all the kids went back outside to play again until we got tired. Day 5! All that happened was cleaned everything and made it all spotless, said what we wanted to say, said our goodbyes and left.
